Arsenal have announced that Alexis Sanchez has agreed to join the club from Barcelona.

The winger endured a difficult season last term in La Liga but shone for Chile as they reached the last 16 of the World Cup before losing to hosts Brazil on penalties. He completed a medical at the club's training ground at London Colney on Thursday and has agreed what was described as a long-term deal for an undisclosed fee.

Manager Arsene Wenger said: "As many people have seen during the World Cup this summer, Alexis is a fantastic footballer and we are delighted that he is joining us.

"Alexis will add power, creativity and much quality to our squad and we are all looking forward to him joining up with us [at the end of July after a post-World Cup holiday].

"He has consistently produced top-quality performances at the highest level for a number of seasons now and we are all excited to see him integrate into the Arsenal squad."

Sanchez added: "I'm so happy to be joining Arsenal, a club which has a great manager, a fantastic squad of players, huge support around the world and a great stadium in London.

"I'm looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and to be playing for Arsenal in the Premier League and Champions League. I will give my best to Arsenal and want to make all the supporters happy."

The club confirmed the agreement on their official website, complete with a picture of Sanchez in the club's new training kit.

After being subjected to years of criticism about Arsenal's reluctance to bring in big-money signings, Wenger has spent a significant sum on one player for the second successive season.

Last summer the Frenchman broke the club's transfer record when signing Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid for £42.5m, and Sanchez has reportedly joined Ozil among the club's highest earners.

Sanchez is Wenger's first signing of this summer window but the club are also closing in on moves for Newcastle's Mathieu Debuchy and Queens Park Rangers striker Loic Remy as they look to improve on a season in which they started promisingly but fell short in the title race.
