Ryan Giggs' chances of staying on at Manchester United have increased with the club's expected new manager Louis van Gaal revealing he would keep one coach at Old Trafford.

Giggs' four-game stint as United's interim manager came to an end with their 1-1 draw at Southampton on Sunday.

Having added to doubts about his future, Giggs - who has been assisted by his fellow Class of 92 members Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Phil Neville - is still waiting to see if he is offered a position under the new regime.

Van Gaal, who is expected to be confirmed as David Moyes' permanent successor later this week, would take over when his commitments as Netherlands manager come to an end at the World Cup and he has dropped a hint that there will be some element of continuity with at least one member of the Class of 92.

"When I go to a new club, I always want to keep one coach from the existing staff," said Van Gaal, currently in the Netherlands preparing for a friendly against Ecuador this weekend.

"At Bayern that person was Herman Kerland, who is still working there now under Pep Guardiola. I wanted to know who was coming through the youth system. I always want to know that.

"He is the man who said to me: "[Thomas] Mueller, [Holger] Badstuber and [David] Alaba. These are the players.

"So I let them train with the first team, I observed them - and then I decided where they were going to play."
