Liverpool will play Roma in a pre-season game at Fenway Park on July 23, a rematch of their 2012 meeting at the home of the Boston Red Sox.

Liverpool last visited the United States in 2012, as part of a tour that also took in a game against Toronto FC in Canada.

As they will again this time, the Reds faced Roma at Fenway Park -- losing 2-1 on that occasion.

The Reds are already scheduled to play a series of games in the US as part of the Guinness International Champions Cup.

They will kick off in that tournament by taking on Olympiakos at Chicago's Soldier Field on July 27.

That will be followed with a match against Manchester City on July 30 at Yankee Stadium in New York, and a meeting with AC Milan at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina., on August 2.

Liverpool's return to Boston has special significance for the club's owners Fenway Sports Group, who are based in the city and also own the Red Sox baseball team.

A group of four Boston executives closed a deal for Roma in 2011 and Thomas DiBenedett, a limited partner in the Fenway group, was Roma's president from September 2011 until the following August.

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner told the club's website: "Liverpool and Roma are two of the most highly-regarded clubs in all of football.

"We're thrilled to welcome them back to Boston and showcase some of the world's top talent."

Defender Jon Flanagan, who featured on the 2012 tour of North America under Rodgers, said that he was pleased to be returning.

He said: "It's crazy over there. You realise how big Liverpool are because of the fans there."
