Gareth Bale has admitted that he idolises Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo - and is hoping to strike up a deadly partnership with him on the pitch.

Bale left Tottenham for Madrid in the summer but initially struggled at the Bernabeu after suffering several niggling injuries.

However he has begun to show why Madrid signed him for a world record £86 million transfer fee, and has credited Ronaldo with helping him to settle and adjust to life in Spain.

"He is a great teammate and friend. He always gives me lots of advice and is helping me a great deal," Bale told the UEFA Champions Matchday magazine.

"He was my idol before I met him and that's even more the case now. He has made everything a lot easier for me. We can strike up a great partnership on the pitch.

"To play with him every week and watch him in training, I kind of learn off him. It's important for me to see what he does and I can hopefully improve myself as a player.

"I thought it was going to be easier, but bit by bit I am learning the language. It is vital for me to learn to speak Spanish to feel more integrated. My teammates help me to feel comfortable.

"This is the best club in the world, where you're under pressure to win lots of trophies and every game.

"We are working to win matches in every competition and here's hoping we can lift the Champions League this season. It is great to be able to win nearly every game."
