An Arsenal delegation is in Germany attempting to negotiate the transfer of highly-rated Schalke midfielder Julian Draxler, according to several reports.
Buy, buy, buy
- If Arsenal were to sign Julian Draxler for £30 million, it would eclipse the total they spent on players two years ago by around £24m
2013-14 = £42.5m so far
2011-12 = £48.72m
2010-11 = £4m
2009-10 = £19.7m
2008-09 = £30.8m
2007-08 = £13.2m
2006-07 = £11.9m
2005-06 = £32.9m
2004-05 = £1m
Discussions are taking place between the two clubs, and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger revealed after the 2-2 draw with Southampton on Tuesday night that he may be forced to sign new faces before the transfer window closes on Friday following the injury setback to Aaron Ramsey and the four-game suspension of Mathieu Flamini, after he was sent off in the match.
Draxler has a £37 million release clause, but it is believed Arsenal are not willing to pay more than £30m for the 20-year-old.
Some reports suggest Arsenal have offered around £25m for Draxler, but other publications are reporting that a deal is some way off with negotiations still ongoing.
Should Arsenal successfully land Draxler, they would break their transfer record for the second time in one season having spent £42.5m on Mesut Ozil in the summer.
The last time Arsenal spent close to this amount of money on players came in the 2011-12 campaign, where they signed the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for £12m, Mikel Arteta for £10m and Per Mertesacker for £8m.
However, with those three players featuring in the first team, the £10.5m spent on Gervinho in the same season was not a success, with the winger leaving and joining Roma in the summer for around £8m.
