Mark Hughes has been charged by the FA for improper conduct following Stoke's 5-1 defeat to Newcastle on Boxing Day.

Hughes was sent to the stands at St James' Park by referee Martin Atkinson for kicking a ball onto the pitch in frustration, shortly after defender Marc Wilson was shown a red card.

The Welshman then expressed his disappointment at the level of officiating following the defeat, admitted he was left "dismayed" by some of the decisions against his side.

A statement on the official FA website read: "It is alleged that his behaviour in or around the 40th minute of the fixture amounted to improper conduct. Hughes has until January 2 2014 to respond to the charge."
