While it is nice to be wished a happy birthday, Wayne Rooney may not welcome the messages and gifts with open arms.

The Manchester United striker turned 28 on Thursday, and on Wednesday inspired his side to a 1-0 Champions League victory over Real Sociedad.

And fellow England player Ashley Cole sent him a birthday wish on Twitter:

Following Sir Alex Ferguson lifting the lid in his autobiography about Rooney, he says he has found a new lease of life under David Moyes.

So Rooney will be pleased that his United team-mates have all dipped their hands into their pockets to purchase their former manager's controversial book as a special present for him.
