Ashley Cole has been ruled out of England's World Cup qualifier with Montenegro on Friday, the FA has confirmed.
The left-back was substituted with 15 minutes remaining of Chelsea's 3-1 win at Norwich on Sunday, appearing to clutch his chest as he left the pitch.
Cole, 32, later complained of a problem with his ribs and underwent a scan on Monday. The defender did not report with the rest of Roy Hodgson's squad at St George's Park, opting to stay at the club for further treatment; meaning he will miss the first of England's two crucial Group H qualifying matches at Wembley.
It has not been confirmed whether Cole will miss Tuesday's game against Poland. The FA also stated Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs had been called up as a replacement.
