Hodgson and England in need of results - Shearer
Alan Shearer insists Roy Hodgson needs to deliver results for England to 'give the nation hope' as they look to seal their place in next year's World Cup.
Hodgson was a guest on BBC's Match of the Day alongside Shearer and presenter Gary Lineker on Saturday night, and Shearer, who scored 30 goals in 63 games for England, believes reaching Rio 2014 will lift the confidence of the country following a satisfactory group campaign.
"After drawing with all but the group minnows we need a pair of results to give the nation hope again. Hodgson was in upbeat and bullish mood when I met him on Saturday in the Match of the Day studio," Shearer wrote in his column with The Sun.
"If we don't win them both it's probably better we don't go to Brazil anyway."
England top their qualifying group by just a point ahead heading into their final two matches against Montenegro and Poland - both at Wembley - with the Three Lions drawing four of their eight ties coupled with four wins.
"He has reason to be with the opportunity that presents itself. It is one that needs to be grabbed, not nervously fumbled with and he has the players to do it," Shearer added.
