Liverpool's hopes of signing Diego Costa appear to be over after manager Brendan Rodgers revealed the player had decided to pen a new contract with Atletico Madrid.

Costa, who has been capped twice by Brazil, scored 10 goals in 31 league games as Atletico finished third in La Liga last season.

Reports earlier this month suggested Liverpool had made an offer of £21.8 million to trigger the player's buy-out clause, but rather than discuss terms with the Anfield club he has chosen to renew his deal at the Vicente Calderon.

Rodgers is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail: "I believe Costa has signed an extension. There's nothing in terms of players to add.

"We've signed players early on and we hope to sign some more before the end of the window. In the meantime, there's nothing at the minute."

The Liverpool boss also said there was no update on the club's pursuit of Valencia left-back Aly Cissokho despite reports he has accepted personal terms. "There's nothing on the Cissokho story," Rodgers added.
