Jamie Carragher insists Luis Suarez is right to seek a move away from Liverpool because they are not up to his standard - but says a switch to Arsenal would be a sideways step.

Suarez's future has been the subject of intense speculation this summer, with Arsenal having a £40,000,001 bid for him turned down by Liverpool.

With Brendan Rodgers refusing to let him go, Suarez has given several interviews to newspapers this week claiming that Liverpool have broken promises they gave him that they would sanction a move were the club to fail to qualify for the Champions League.

Liverpool finished seventh last season, despite Suarez scoring 30 goals.

But Carragher, who came off the bench with Suarez during Steven Gerrard's testimonial at Anfield last week, believes his former team-mate should spurn Arsenal's overtures and only leave Liverpool if an offer from Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich, the European champions, comes in.

Carragher wrote in his Daily Mail column: "Luis Suarez is too good for Liverpool. He is one of the top players in the world, whereas Liverpool were only the seventh best team in England last season.

"His talents are greater than the stage on which he plays. Not only does he deserve to play in the Champions League, he should be winning it.

"Luis Suarez is also too good for Arsenal. In recent years, they haven't challenged for trophies; they have not made an impact in the Champions League and they are no closer to winning the Premier League.

"If Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich wanted him, I would wish Luis all the luck in the world and staunchly defend him. That is his level; teams who have a great chance of winning the Champions League. That's why I'm so puzzled by his determination to leave for the Emirates.

"If Suarez were to leave Liverpool for anyone other than Europe's three most eminent clubs, it would be a mistake."

Turning his attention to Manchester United's Wayne Rooney, Carragher added: "It would also be making a mistake if he tried to force through a move from United.

"Sometimes players would do well to look at the bigger picture. I can understand if Wayne has been seduced by the idea of becoming Jose Mourinho's main man, but he could achieve so much more at Old Trafford."
