Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling has pleaded not guilty after being charged with assaulting model girlfriend Shana Ann Rose.

The 18-year-old spent Thursday night in a police cell after being arrested over an alleged incident.

Sterling had been arrested at around 10.30pm in the Liverpool suburb of Page Moss. He was subsequently charged with common assault and held in custody overnight.

Sterling denied the charge when he appeared before Liverpool magistrates on Friday morning, and will face a trial at a later date.

The charge, listed as a section 39 offence under the Criminal Justice Act 1988, can lead to a prison sentence of up to six months if a defendant is convicted.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "Raheem Sterling, 18, of Woolton, was charged with Section 39 common assault.

"Sterling was remanded in custody to appear at Liverpool Magistrates' Court today."

Sterling, born in Jamaica, moved to England with his family when he was five and grew up in north London.

He joined QPR's youth set-up at the age of 11, moving to Liverpool in February 2010, when he was 15.

The winger made his first-team debut against Wigan in March 2012, and then gained his first England cap in a friendly against Sweden in November that year.

He signed a five-year contract in December 2012, shortly after his 18th birthday.
