Liverpool have sold midfielder Jay Spearing to Bolton for a reported fee of £1.75 million.

The 24-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the Championship club after passing a medical on Thursday.

Spearing spent last season on loan at the Reebok Stadium, winning Bolton's Player of the Year award.

He made 55 appearances for Liverpool after graduating from the club's academy and featured regularly under Kenny Dalglish.

But he did not appear in a league game under Brendan Rodgers and was made available.

Bolton manager Dougie Freedman said: "He was our No. 1 target throughout the summer. We feel Jay brings a lot of quality to the football club. He turned down a few other clubs to come here.

"He has got huge potential and he believes he will develop here. I am delighted. I really feel this is the big signing we needed."

Rodgers has also sold Andy Carroll and Jonjo Shelvey this summer, raising almost £22 million.
