The newspaper says that Arsenal are prepared to meet Rooney's salary demands - said to be in excess of £240,000 a week - and can match or better Chelsea's existing bid of around £26 million which United rejected.

But with Arsenal also eagerly pursuing Luis Suarez it seems that they will only have the resources to sign one of the two, meaning that unless Chelsea increase their offer - which it seems they will shortly - Rooney could start the season at Old Trafford.
