Disney Under-16 football match ends in all-out brawl
A match between youth teams at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Osceola County ended up in an all-out fight between players and parents which resulted in paramedics being called to treat injured parties.
The game, which was between Under-16 teams from Miami and Orlando in the cuddly-sounding Disney Cup international football tournament, had finished when the fighting started with both teams blaming the other for starting it.
"Parents who witnessed the Saturday afternoon altercation painted a particularly vivid picture of parents and players from a Miami team storming the field, punching an elderly man and repeatedly kicking a downed player in the head," the Orlando Sentinel reported.
"What made this insane was that the parents cleared the bench," said one parent. "The parents on their team helped their children. They even hit some kids on our team. A grandparent was punched in the chest, and his pacemaker went off."
Another parent of an Orlando player said his son was hit by a mother of one of the Miami team. "I heard this commotion and I saw a bunch of Miami's parents running out on the field," he said. "I saw our goalkeeper on the ground being pummeled by two or three of their guys."
The local sheriff's office has recommended that a felony battery charge be filed against one unnamed Miami player. No charges were recommended against any adults.
