Atletico Madrid have confirmed that they will take Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois on loan for a third season.

The Belgium international, 21, joined the Blues from Genk in 2011 but is yet to make an appearance for their first-team because of the presence of Petr Cech.

As such he expressed an interest in remaining in the Spanish capital in order to continue his development.

During his time at the club he has won the Copa del Rey, the Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup.

A statement on Atletico's official website read: "Thibaut Courtois will return to Atletico Madrid next season after an agreement was reached between our club and Chelsea for him to play on loan for another year."

Courtois, who conceded just 29 goals in 37 appearances last season, the best record in the Primera Division, is happy to stay put for another season, given the opportunity to play Champions League football.

"I am very happy because it was what I wanted," he said. "I have always said that I wanted to continue at Atletico next season and take part in such an important competition as the Champions League after we qualified for it in such a brilliant way.

"I am only thinking about continuing to enjoy the incredible support that we have and I hope we can continue to bring them a lot of happiness."
