Llambias resigns as Newcastle MD
Newcastle United managing director Derek Llambias has resigned, the club has announced, the day after Joe Kinnear was confirmed as the new director of football at St James' Park.
"I have had an incredible journey during my five years at the club, including some challenging times," Llambias said in a statement via the club's official website. "I will reflect with great fondness on my time in the North East and, in me, Newcastle United have a lifelong supporter.
"I want to thank the staff for their hard work, our fans for their support of the club, and wish them all well for the future."
Kinnear claimed Llambias had resigned during a radio interview with talkSPORT on Monday evening, but only on Wednesday was the news confirmed.
Llambias was not involved in the appointment of Kinnear, despite being such an important figure at the club, taking care of the day-to-day affairs while Ashley maintained his business empire.
The man who replaced Chris Mort as club chairman in 2008 was also a close ally of manager Alan Pardew, whose own future in now in doubt following the events of the past week.
