Phil Jones has declared that his preferred position is in the centre of defence and believes he shoots himself in the foot with his versatility.

The England international's only start in a major game of an injury-hit season came in the centre of midfield in the 1-1 draw at Tottenham.

He has also played right-back for Sir Alex Ferguson and insisted he is willing to carry on switching between positions but would rather be in the middle of the defence.

He said: "I have said all along that is where I feel most comfortable. I understand and read the game better there. But wherever I am asked to play I will play there."

Jones is one of five senior central defenders in Ferguson's squad but whereas Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Jonny Evans rarely play anywhere else and Chris Smalling is sometimes used at right-back, he alternates between defence and midfield.

He added: "I kind of shoot myself in the foot a bit. But I am at Manchester United and I love playing for this club and I am happy to play anywhere."

Jones missed the first three months of the campaign with back and knee problems and has only started three league games since then.

He said: "I didn't have a great start to the season but hopefully I can push my way into the side now and get some games under my belt."
