Chelsea deny Grant is on his way back to club

Chelsea have dismissed claims that they are in discussions to bring former manager Avram Grant back to Stamford Bridge.

Grant had worked as director of football at Chelsea at the start of the 2007-08 season before becoming caretaker manager after the dismissal of Jose Mourinho.

In that guise, he led the Blues to their first Champions League final, losing to Manchester United on penalties, but he was relieved of his duties at the end of the campaign.

There had been speculation in a number of British newspapers on Monday morning that owner Roman Abramovich was considering re-employing Grant to assist current interim coach Rafael Benitez, who has endured a miserable start to his tenure with only two points from three games.

However, a Chelsea spokesman said on Monday: "There is no truth in the reports."

Benitez said after the 3-1 defeat to West Ham United on Saturday lunchtime that he was "not 100% sure" his position was safe.
