Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney is a doubt for England's friendly with Sweden next week after picking up an ankle injury against Aston Villa.

United claimed a thrilling 3-2 win at Villa Park, with Javier Hernandez the hero for the Red Devils, but the victory was soured slightly by the sight of Rooney picking up an injury.

He hobbled out of the action 11 minutes from time and will be assessed by the club's medical staff on Sunday.

"Rooney got an ankle knock and he's got some ice on it," United boss Sir Alex Ferguson told Sky Sports. "We'll see what it's like tomorrow."

The news about Rooney will come as a blow to England boss Roy Hodgson who selected only three recognised strikers in his squad for the trip to Stockholm - Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck being the other two.
