Chelsea are poised to hand midfielder John Obi Mikel a bumper five-year deal.

The 25-year-old, who was famously involved in a tug o' war between Chelsea and Manchester United earlier in his career, is in the final year of his deal.

Talks have been ongoing for some time and Mikel's agent claims common ground has been reached.

"Mikel will soon sign a new five-year contract with an improved salary and we are just about finalising the details of it," Mikel's agent John Shittu told the Sun.

"Mikel is one of Chelsea's most consistent performers and the club agrees with us he deserves a new and improved contract.

"He has a year left and Chelsea have decided to add four more years to it."

Mikel has been a fixture in the side in Chelsea's fine start to the Premier League season.
