Roberto Mancini hopes Manchester City's last-gasp 2-1 victory over West Brom on Saturday will give them the boost they need to snatch three much-needed points from Ajax in midweek.

Edin Dzeko struck during injury-time to earn ten-man City a dramatic comeback triumph at The Hawthorns, ahead of their Champions League trip to Amsterdam.

City have picked up a solitary point from their group-stage fixtures so far - against Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund - and desperately need to triumph against Ajax to avoid an early exit from the Champions League for the second year in succession.

"We need nine points from the last four games [in the Champions League] -- but our only thought is three in Amsterdam," Mancini said in the Sun. "We think about only the next game after we've won in Amsterdam. That will be important."

Mancini admits City's Champions League experiences this season have conjured unwanted memories of their toils during the last campaign.

"I think this group is worse than last year," he said. "But we want to try to do everything we can to go to the next stage. I think we could be in the same situation as last year. A lot depends on this next game."
