Sir Alex Ferguson feels Darren Fletcher will derive great benefit from his first Manchester United outing in ten months.

Fletcher has been battling a chronic bowel condition that some felt would end his career. But the Scotland international has worked hard over the summer and made his return as a substitute in the 1-0 win over Galatasaray.

The midfielder received a tremendous ovation from the Old Trafford faithful and although his contribution was limited, Ferguson believes it is a huge step for Fletcher.

"The supporters recognise what a tough time he has had for the last year," Ferguson said. "They gave him a marvellous reception.

"He has been out of the game for a year, it took him one or two minutes to get going but he can only be better after that.

"I was pleased for him. He didn't do great but he didn't do badly. Taking into consideration it was his first game for ten months, I think he acquitted himself very well. "
