Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye has spoken of his hope to be reunited with former team-mate Mathieu Debuchy, who he believes wants a move to Newcastle.

Debuchy, 27, has made clear his wish to leave Lille this summer, having spent his entire career thus far at the Ligue 1 side, and has been a major target for Newcastle all summer.

Cabaye hopes that the Magpies can now complete their move for the full-back, having been frustrated in their attempts so far as Les Dogues seek an experienced replacement.

The France star told the Journal: "Mathieu has made a very difficult to decision to leave Lille, but he has made the decision. Now I hope Newcastle push for Mathieu and I want them to do the deal.

"I spoke with him two days ago and he told me he wants to come. I hope Derek (Llambias) and [owner] Mike Ashley will do the business now. He wants to play for Newcastle and I hope that he comes to Newcastle because, of course, he is my friend, but also a very good player for Newcastle.''

The club have once more been patient in the transfer market, refusing to pay more than they wish for players targeted. Young midfielders Romain Amalfitano and Gael Bigirimana are Newcastle's only summer signings to date.
