Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given is confident that Paul Lambert would prove a "great appointment" as manager, amid speculation the Scot is set to take the reins at Villa Park.

Reports on Thursday suggest that Norwich boss Lambert's representatives have been in talks with the Aston Villa hierarchy over replacing Alex McLeish in the hotseat.

McLeish was dismissed soon after the end of the Premier League season, having finished 16th in the table with Villa's lowest total of Premier League wins (seven).

And after going through a dire debut season with Villa, Given would welcome Lambert, who kept Norwich in the Premier League with room to spare, to the club.

"I have no idea … about what's going on at Aston Villa - but if Paul was to come in, he would be a great appointment because he is a fantastic manager," Given said.

"Since he took the hotseat at any club he has been at, he has just gone all the way up all the time, so hopefully if they can get that done, that would be great news for the club.

"The sooner the manager is in place for next season - because he will have targets and players he will want to get in himself - the sooner that's done, the better."
