Gremio have confirmed the signing of Liverpool defender Fabio Aurelio.

Aurelio, 32, has suffered extensive injury problems in recent years and made just two appearances for the Reds in the Premier League last season.

With his contract at Anfield expiring this summer, he has decided to end a 12-year spell in Europe to return to his homeland.

An announcement on the Brazilian club's official website read: "Gremio confirm agreement with the left-back Fabio Aurelio Rodrigues. The player's contract extends to December 31, 2013.

"The player, developed at Sao Paulo, has been with Liverpool in England since 2006 and also served for six years at Valencia in Spain."

Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva, who began his career at Gremio, wrote on Twitter: "Gremio signed Fabio Aurelio. What a great news."
