Liverpool's American owners are considering an approach for former Barcelona manager Louis van Gaal, as they look to replace ousted sporting director Damien Comolli in the coming weeks.

Reports in several English newspapers suggest that Van Gaal has been approached over the role, although the exact nature of the position remains unclear. Van Gaal, 60, though is understood to be interested in the position.

Fenway Sports Group have accelerated their overhaul of the club in recent days and the appointment of a new sports director is seen as a priority, with Comolli having left a similar role six weeks ago.

Approaches have been made to candidates for the vacant managerial position over the past week and whilst that has dominated the headlines, the American group is thought to be prioritising the appointment of a director, above finding a new manager.

Van Gaal has emerged as a candidate for the position, with few contenders able to match the Dutchman's vast experience. Van Gaal has won league titles in Germany, Netherlands and Spain, as well as guiding Ajax to the 1994/5 Champions League title.
