David Luiz has issued an upbeat fitness bulletin as he battles to earn a place in the Chelsea starting XI for the Champions League final against Bayern Munich on Saturday.

After Chelsea's 2-1 victory over Blackburn last weekend, interim boss Roberto Di Matteo admitted that he will leave it until the 11th hour before making a call on Luiz and Gary Cahill, both of whom are struggling with hamstring problems.

If one or both of the pair are absent, Chelsea will really be struggling for central defensive options, as John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic are both suspended for the Allianz Arena showdown.

But Luiz has eased Di Matteo's fears by insisting he is right on course to win his fitness race.

"It is improving," Luiz is quoted as saying by the Evening Standard. "On the pitch I am now more comfortable. I am confident [I will be ready]. I have one game that will be more special than all the games before and for this I hope to play on Saturday."
