STORY OF THE ROUND
The third round plaudits went to two non-league sides, as Conference clubs Macclesfield and Luton Town sent Championship opposition home with their tails between their legs. Mid-table Macc trailed 1-0 to Cardiff at the Moss Rose before Matthew Barnes-Homer levelled in the 85th minute and struck the winner from the spot three minutes later. Luton earned Wolves boss Stale Solbakken the sack as Alex Lawless's goal soon after the break booked them a place in the fourth round. Newcastle United were the only Premier League club to lose to lower league opposition, as Will Hoskins and Andrea Orlandi secured a 2-0 victory for Brighton & Hove Albion - the Seagulls knocking out the Magpies for the second successive season.
GOAL OF THE ROUND
Giorgos Karagounis (Fulham) Karagounis wasn't even supposed to have been on the pitch after Martin Jol told him he would get a rest and not play the whole game. But his influence proved vital as a superb lob-volley from the angle of the box in the 80th minute earned a replay against Blackpool.
PLAYER OF THE ROUND
Liam Bridcutt (Brighton) Former Chelsea youth player Bridcutt might not have been among the goals in Brighton's win over Newcastle, but his was the stand-out performance. Brighton boss Gus Poyet said after the game: "If I was coach of Real [Madrid] I would take him, because he deserves to go to the highest level. As a holding midfielder, there is no better player in the division."
