San Francisco Deltas defeat New York Cosmos to win NASL title

The San Francisco Deltas won the North American Soccer League championship by defeating the New York Cosmos 2-0 at Kezar Stadium on Sunday night.

Tom Heinemann scored the match's decisive goal, on target from the penalty spot after Cosmos keeper Jimmy Maurer felled Jackson in the area in the 19th minute.

In the 77th minute, Evgenij Starikov had New York's best chance to equalise, but Maxim Tissot was able to get his head to the ball ahead of the diving Cosmos forward.

The Deltas, however, always looked most likely to score next, and five minutes into injury time, Devon Sandoval put the icing on the cake for the hosts -- prodding the ball into an open net after Maurer was drawn to the ball by Kyle Bekker.

San Francisco won the title in its first year of existence, though its future remains uncertain. In a recent legal filing against the NASL, U.S. Soccer alleged that the Deltas would be closing their doors after this season, but that has not been confirmed by the team or NASL.
