Ferrari has added Monaco's Charles Leclerc to its driver academy, the FDA, a role which will involve a currently undefined role with American outfit Haas.

Leclerc finished fourth in Formula 3 last year and has moved up to GP3 with ART for the coming season. The FDA announcement also confirmed some form of role with 2016 debutants Haas, which arrives in F1 this year with a Ferrari technical partnership and power unit.

The team announcement said: "He is also on the books with the Haas Formula One squad and, this year, Charles will also be a development driver for Scuderia Ferrari."

Haas team boss Guenther Steiner says Leclerc's role is still being discussed and did not rule out the possibility of Friday appearances during the season.

"We are still talking this one through with Ferrari," Steiner said. "There will be news in the near future but it's still being talked about. We are discussing [Fridays], yes."

The other driver joining the FDA is Giuliano Alesi, son of former Ferrari driver and race winner Jean. Alesi will race against Leclerc in GP3 this year in the Trident team.

The pair join current FDA members Antonio Fuoco and Ghan Yu Zhou.
