Alonso still committed to running pro cycling team
Fernando Alonso says his plans to launch a pro cycling team are still on track and that he has never stopped working on the project behind the scenes.
Last year Alonso's plan to take over the Basque Euskaltel Euskadi team fell through, forcing him to start from scratch with his own outfit the Fernando Alonso Cycling Team (FACT). He admits the process of creating a UCI WorldTour team is not easy, but insists his plans are still "completely on time".
"Looking again? I never stopped," he said. "But we are doing it in a very profressional way, we never stopped, but we are doing it step by step. There are rules to respect and we are respecting those. Maybe that is a surprise for some people but we never stop.
"Every point to achieve in this last couple of months we have been doing it, so when the official news arrives we will say. But of course there is a lot of tension, expectations and all the news from the last five months is never from our side and obviously only rumours that are sometimes completely erroneous. But everything is still completely on time."
Alonso attended the 18th stage of the Giro d'Italia on Thursday and handed the leader's maglia rosa (pink jersey) to Colombian Nairo Quintana.
