Jo-Wilfried Tsonga came back from a set down to beat Florian Mayer in their first round match at the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam.

Fifth seed Tsonga battled back after losing the opening set to complete a 4-6 6-3 6-1 victory in one hour 27 minutes on court. He will now face either Marin Cilic or Lukas Rosol for a place in the quarter-final.

Third seed Tomas Berdych encountered no trouble in his first round match with Andreas Seppi, winning through 6-3 6-3 in little over an hour.

"It was a good and solid start to the tournament," Berdych told atpworldtour.com. "He was not an easy opponent, having played well in Australia. I enjoy playing here. It would be an honour to add my name on the trophy, among great players and legends. But this year, as always, it is a very strong field."

Berdych will now face either Nicolas Mahut or Gilles Simon in the second round. Elsewhere, French qualifier Paul-Henri Mathieu enjoyed a shock 4-6 7-6(2) 6-4 win over Ivan Dodig to set up a clash with either top seed Juan Martin Del Potro or Gael Monfils, while Michael Berrer defeated Jesse Huta Galung 6-4 2-6 6-3.

Monfils secured his fifth ATP World Tour title with a 6-4 6-4 victory over defending champion Richard Gasquet at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier on Sunday.

Andy Murray, who was a late entry as a wildcard at the Rotterdam tournament, will play his first round match with Edouard Roger-Vasselin later this week.
