Chelsea defender David Luiz has claimed he chose to stay at Stamford Bridge this summer despite an official approach from Barcelona.

The Brazilian international was at the centre of a series of rumours about his future during the transfer window, but insists that he is content at Stamford Bridge under Jose Mourinho.

Speaking to Brazilian newspaper Gazeta Esportiva , Luiz said: "There was an official offer [from Barcelona], but I decided to stay at Chelsea.

"I am happy to play for a big club and be in the national team to represent my country."

Barcelona reportedly made a bid of £21.5 million for Luiz in August, which amounted to only half of the price tag Chelsea wanted for the 26-year-old.
