Last year's runner-up Dean Winstanley had to dig deep to reach the second round of the BDO World Championship with a 3-1 win over Joey ten Berge.

A host of seeds have been toppled in the opening round, but the No. 3 seed comprehensively outscored his opponent and did enough on the doubles to seal his passage.

Ten Berge did not have a shot at a double for five legs, but some slack finishing from Winstanley enabled the Dutchman to get on the board by taking out double-top. Ten Berge forced the second set to a deciding leg and Winstanley limped over the line, taking out double-five with his opponent sat on a two-dart finish.

Winstanley scored heavily in the third set but again struggled on the doubles and Ten Berge cut the deficit.

The Englishman regained his focus in the fourth set to book his passage into round two.

Geert de Vos made his debut on the Lakeside stage a winning one by taking out Tony West 3-1. The 11th seed West arrived at the Lakeside to find he was one dart short and had to be borrow a new set. He never looked settled and De Vos took advantage to move into round two.

Alan Norris breathed a huge sigh of relief after claiming a 3-2 win over Benito Van de Pas. He looked on course for a comfortable win, but Van de Pas battled back to take out 119 and force a final leg. Norris steeled himself and nailed 74 to seal his place in round two.
