Former Tour de France winners Chris Froome and Sir Bradley Wiggins have both been named in Great Britain's provisional squad for the upcoming UCI road world championships in Spain.

The Team Sky riders have been named on a 14-man shortlist for the championships but will not be joined by 2011 champion Mark Cavendish.

Cavendish recently returned to action having had surgery on a shoulder injury sustained during the opening stage of this year's Tour de France. He will take part in this weekend's Tour of Britain.

Commonwealth road race champion Geraint Thomas joins Froome and Wiggins in the provisional squad, as does British champion Peter Kennaugh. Only eight riders will be selected to take part in the men's elite road race.

Both Thomas and Wiggins have been named in the provisional time-trial squad, as has Commonwealth champion Alex Dowsett and Steve Cummings. Two will be chosen from the four.

Lizzie Armitstead, who won gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, leads the selections for the women's road race team.
