Chris Froome moved up to fourth in the overall standings at the Vuelta a Espana after narrowly missing out on a sixth-stage victory.

Spain's Alejandro Valverde, of Movistar, pipped Team Sky's Froome to the line of the 167km stage after a gruelling uphill finish to take the overall lead.

Another Spaniard, Alberto Contador, finished third, with Froome now 22 seconds behind leader Valverde.

Colombia's Nairo Quintana is 15 seconds off the pace in the overall standings, with Contador a further three seconds back in third.

Former Tour de France winner Froome, who crashed out of this year's race, is aiming to become the first British rider to win two the three Grand Tour races.
