Nacer Bouhanni made it two Giro d'Italia stage wins in four days on Friday as he took his seventh overall victory of the season.

The FDJ.fr racer, who won stage four on Tuesday, burst past Giacomo Nizzolo of Trek Factory Racing in a mass sprint to win stage seven by a narrow margin.

"I wanted to start my sprint just in the final corner [with 250 metres to go] on the left hand side but I couldn't do that because Nizzolo and [Luka] Mezgec [of Giant-Shimano] were already there ahead of me and my path was blocked," Bouhanni told reporters afterwards.

"So I went up on the right, there was a little bit of a gap I could get through, and that was that."

Orica-GreenEdge rider Michael Matthews kept his 21-second overall lead from his fellow Australian Cadel Evans after finishing in the peloton, with the first mountain stage to come on Saturday.

"The stage was a bit different to how it looked on paper, it was a bit more technical," Matthews, who won stage six, said. "I didn't quite have it in the legs after yesterday but it was a great day for the team."
