The Giro d'Italia has been thrown into crisis after its race director was suspended from his role as chief operating officer and reports of several millions of pounds missing from the race organiser's accounts.
Michele Acquarone, CEO of RCS Sport who organise the Giro, was suspended after it was revealed that up to £11 million went missing from the company's books. New CEO Riccardo Taranto is set to front an internal investigation into the financial scandal.
The news arrives just days before the announcement of the 2014 route, which is set to begin in Belfast on May 9.
The Giro is one of cycling's three Grand Tours.
