Sir Bradley Wiggins has retained the leader's jersey at the Tour of Britain after Irishman Sam Bennett won stage five in Wales.

AN Post Chain Reaction rider Bennett conquered the double ascent of Caerphilly Mountain and outsprinted Michal Golas (Omega Pharma-Quickstep) and Martin Elmiger (IAM Cycling) to finish in 4:35.28. Wiggins finished seventh overall.

Wiggins (20:47.04) is 37 seconds ahead of fellow Team Sky rider Ian Stannard in the general classification, with Elmiger a further six seconds back in third. Jack Bauer (Garmin-Sharp) is fourth, 55 seconds off the lead.

In wet and windy conditions, Team Sky were forced to defend numerous attacks including a late push by Dan Martin and Nairo Quintana.

Friday's sixth stage over a 137km route between Sidmouth and Dartmoor - with a category one summit finish on Haytor - could prove decisive, as last year's Devon stage did. Saturday and Sunday's respective finishes in Guildford and central London will favour bunch sprint finishes.
