Tour de France champions Chris Froome and Sir Bradley Wiggins could ride together for the first time in seven months after being named in Great Britain's provisional squad for the Road World Championships.

Great Britain have put together a strong squad to travel to Italy, which also includes Mark Cavendish and Geraint Thomas.

Wiggins will support Froome's road race title bid as he aims for individual gold in the men's time trial, the event in which he triumphed at London 2012 days after becoming the first British rider to win the Tour de France.

London 2012 silver medallist Lizzie Armitstead leads Britain's women in the road race.

The World Championships will take place in Tuscany from September 22-29.
