Tour de France and Olympic champion Bradley Wiggins is receiving treatment after being involved in a crash while out on a training ride on Wednesday.

The 32-year-old was reportedly involved in an incident with a van in Wrightington, not far from his home in Eccleston, Lancashire. He is believed to have broken ribs and suffered wrist and hand injuries - with reports suggesting he was rushed to hospital for treatment.

The incident happened at around 6pm on Wednesday evening, as the van pulled away from a petrol station forecourt. A nearby garage attendant, Yasmin Smith, rushed to Wiggins' aid.

"By the time I got there he had moved to a safer place but was still on the ground and he was in a lot of pain," Smith was quoted as saying.

"He said he thought he had broken his ribs and, while a lot of police cars arrived, it was about 15 minutes before the ambulance got there by which time he was blue."

Lancashire Police confirmed to reporters that they had attended an incident in the area, with the BBC reporting that Wiggins' injuries were not life threatening.
