Thomas de Gendt produced a ride that will live long in the memory on his way to victory in stage 20 of the Giro d'Italia.

De Gendt's highly impressive solo effort allowed him to make significant gains in the general classification, giving him hope of a podium place.

Having been uncatchable after he attacked from a breakaway group, De Gendt is now fourth overall in the race.

After the final day in the mountains of the race - 218km from Caldes/Val di Sole to Passo dello Stelvio - Sunday's time trial now promises to be an engrossing spectacle.

The pink jersey remains in the hands of Joaquin Rodriguez, who finished three minutes 22 seconds back - and managed to recover the time he lost to Ryder Hesjedal on the previous stage. Rodriguez now has a 31-second advantage over Hesjedal.

The 30km stage in Milan on Sunday will define the outcome of the race.
