Nebraska coach Scott Frost is in a finalist for the Bear Bryant Coach of the Year Award after taking UCF to an undefeated season and a win in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl. The winner will be announced tonight in Houston.

Nebraska coach Scott Frost, who's in Houston on Wednesday as a finalist for the Bear Bryant Coach of the Year Award based on his run at UCF, was asked about Alabama coach Nick Saban's decision to bench Jalen Hurts for Tua Tagovailoa in the national title game. "It was a decision I don't know I would have been courageous enough to make. That's the answer you want to hear. The other answer is that he was pretty obviously better and they had 12 games to figure that out and didn't. Coach Saban is above criticism with everything he's accomplished, so I don't mean it that way, but I recruited Tua out of high school and knew what he could do and it doesn't surprise me that he did what he did. Jalen's a great player, too. That was a very bold and courageous move and I'm surprised it didn't happen earlier [in the season]." Frost's recruitment of Tagovailoa dates back to his time as an Oregon assistant.

UCF backup QB following Frost to Cornhuskers

Backup QB Noah Vedral, who completed 22 of 29 passes for 276 yards and a TD in mopup duty for UCF this season, will transfer to Nebraska and sit out a season.

Mitch Sherman ESPN Staff Writer

Noah Vedral is following coach Scott Frost and his staff from UCF to Nebraska, the quarterback announced today. Vedral served as the backup to McKenzie Milton and played as a true freshman in 2017. Vedral is from Wahoo, Nebraska and was not recruited by the former staff in Lincoln. His father, Mike Vedral, played at Nebraska, as did uncles Mark and Jon Vedral in addition to uncles Matt and Seth Turman. Vedral must sit out in 2018 as the Cornhuskers find a new QB among a group that includes returning backups Patrick O'Brien and Tristan Gebbia and newly enrolled freshman Adrian Martinez.

Alabama ended the season the same way it started -- ranked No. 1 in the AP poll. Undefeated UCF, meanwhile, finished at No. 6, but was the only other school to receive first-place votes.
