CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- Ronald Butler completed a 21-yard TD pass to Steven Newbold that tied it with 1.7 seconds left and Lane Clark's extra point gave Tennessee State a 41-40 win over Austin Peay on Saturday night.
The Tigers (6-3, 3-2 Ohio Valley) led 34-19 with 4:49 left in the third quarter before giving up the next 21 points to Austin Peay (0-9, 0-7). The Governors took the lead with 1:05 left in the game on JaVaughn Craig's 40-yard TD pass to Jared Beard.
Butler finished with 212 yards passing and 130 yards rushing. He threw for four touchdowns and ran for two more.
Craig passed for 322 yards and five TDs and ran for another 144 yards. Beard caught eight passes for 146 yards and three TDs.
The Governors closed the gap to 34-32 with 6:05 left in the game but failed to tie it with the 2-point try.
