I noticed that Andrew Golota had four world heavyweight title fights, and didn't win any. Is this a record? asked Tim Barker

The Polish heavyweight Andrew Golota's four world title fights were against Lennox Lewis for the WBC belt in 1997, Chris Byrd (IBF) and John Ruiz (WBA) in 2004, and Lamon Brewster (WBO) in 2005. Golota didn't win any - but he did draw against Byrd, who kept the title as the defending champion.

That draw means Golota has a slightly better record than Jameel McCline, who had four world heavyweight title fights and lost the lot. Like Golota, McCline also had one fight under each of the four main sanctioning bodies: he lost to Wladimir Klitschko (WBO) in 2002, Chris Byrd (IBF) in 2004, and Nikolai Valuev (WBA) and Samuel Peter (WBC) during 2007.

Of fighters who did win a version of the world heavyweight title at some point, Jersey Joe Walcott lost six title fights, and John Ruiz five.
