Leon McKenzie celebrated his 36th birthday by maintaining his unbeaten record as a professional boxer with a hard-fought win over Danny Brown.

McKenzie, a former Premier League footballer who made his debut in the ring less than a year ago, was taken the six-round distance by Brown before edging the contest 59-56 at York Hall.

"I must say a big thank you to Danny Brown," said McKenzie, who spoke to ESPN about making the transition from football to boxing ahead of the fight.

He added: "He's a tough kid but I have said, and will say again, I'm coming and improving every fight."

While Brown had only won one of his last 10 fights, McKenzie's record improves to four wins and a draw from his five bouts.
