Promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed that 2012 bantamweight gold-medallist Luke Campbell has joined his Matchroom stable.

Hearn confirmed the capture of 25-year-old Campbell at a London press conference on Tuesday, and the Hull-born fighter has expressed the decision to turn professional was down to his desire to become a world champion.

"Every step of the amateurs was a stepping stone for when I turned professional, and I've done it for one reason and that's to be world champion," Campbell told Sky Sports. "This is a new chapter and I can't wait for the journey to start.

"I'm the most successful amateur in British history so it's good to learn that experience and take it into the professional ranks.

"I've got a lot of hard work ahead of me but I'm committed. It was a difficult decision because I've been part of Team GB for 12 years and I know nothing else."

Campbell won gold at the 2012 London Olympic Games, defeating John Joe-Nevin in the 56kg bantamweight division final and was later awarded an MBE in the 2013 New Year's Honours list for services to boxing.

Hearn also confirmed that Campbell will make his professional debut in his home city of Hull, and is impressed with his latest addition.

"Luke and I have had a number of discussions over the last few weeks and everything has been very positive," said Hearn. "He's taken his time, but he's impressed me with his determination and popularity in Hull, the likes of which I've never seen in any city since the likes of Ricky Hatton.

"We are going to grow Luke Campbell all over the country but the journey will begin on July 6 or 13 in Hull with a huge outdoor event.

"Having been to Hull and seen the response from the community I'm not sure we're going to have a venue big enough."
