Chad Dawson beat Bernard Hopkins on Saturday evening to win the WBC light-heavyweight title.

Despite opening up a deep cut above the left eye of Dawson, Hopkins lost the bout through a 12-round majority decision. The judges gave the bout to Dawson 117-111, 117-111, 114-114.

For Hopkins, 47, this may have been his last fight, but it was not without controversy as he landed a head-butt on Dawson to create a nasty gash over his eye.

Hopkins continued to target the cut, but Dawson held his nerve, landing the heavier of the blows in the final rounds. Indeed, Dawson appeared more confident as the bout wore on, landing combinations to the body of Hopkins, nearly becoming the first boxer to knock him out in the process.

After the fight, Dawson lifted the belt high above his head in triumph before declaring Hopkins was a "dirty fighter".

"My head is hurting from all the head-butts," Dawson said. "I've got to give him a lot of credit. He's a future Hall of Famer, he's a hell of a fighter. But he's a dirty fighter. But if you can get through 12 rounds with him, you can get through anything."
