Danny Garcia claimed the vacant WBC light-welterweight belt after a dominant victory over an ageing Erik Morales in Houston.

Morales, 35, fought gamely and refused to take a backward step, but his younger foe showed superior fitness and a counter-punching style that proved difficult to combat.

Garcia, 24, dropped his rival with a crushing right hook in the 11th round and deservedly secured a unanimous decision, taking the contest 118-109, 117-110 and 116-112 on the judges' scorecards.

Morales, who lost the WBC strap at the weigh-in after coming in at 142 pounds - two over the limit, said: "His style gave me problems."

He added: "It seems like my age caught up to me tonight."

"I won this fight with my conditioning," said Garcia. "If you have dreams, hold on to them. I'm proof that they come true."
